The result is a scoped worksheet
Capital Gains by State supplies information and browser calculations for an individual ordinary capital-asset scenario. Using it does not establish a tax preparer, investment adviser or legal relationship. The worksheet does not transmit a filing or make an estimated payment. You remain responsible for actual records, filing choices, source allocation, current agency requirements and any professional advice you obtain. Read the displayed calculation scope before using a number in a decision.
Annual comparisons require consistent facts
The incremental result compares annual scenarios without and with the modeled sale. Federal ordinary income, other preferential income, NIIT MAGI and net investment income have distinct meanings. Changing sale proceeds does not automatically prepare all four. State taxable bases and final liabilities are independently approved figures. A result can be negative when supported credit or annual liability changes reduce tax. That difference is not a promise of a refund or an available cash balance.
Excluded transactions and return effects
Collectibles, depreciation recapture, qualifying special stock and other special-rate sales need their own applicable worksheets. Credits, AMT, changing deductions, carryovers, residency allocations and other taxes can require a complete return comparison. A home-sale exclusion must be independently established; entering an amount here does not prove ownership, use or other eligibility. A loss output does not compute the deductibility of the loss or the future value of a carryforward.
Records, sharing and corrections
You may use a hypothetical scenario to understand a rule without supplying personal financial records. The Share control stores input values in the copied URL fragment. Recipients can reconstruct that scenario, so review the complete link before sending it. The corrections channel accepts a report category, affected pathname, message and optional reply address. It is for reproducible site issues rather than individualized return preparation. Do not submit Social Security numbers, brokerage credentials, account statements or tax-return attachments.
Sources and availability
Official references can change, move or publish successor rules after our review. We identify dated instructions and model limits rather than promising universal accuracy for every possible taxpayer. Recheck current guidance before filing or acting on an estimate. Browser software, network failures or unavailable report storage can affect access; an error message is not a successful submission. The methodology explains the supported arithmetic, and the editorial policy explains how verified corrections are incorporated. These terms replace the former short disclaimer without changing the requirement to check the actual scope of each calculation.
