South Dakota Capital Gains Tax Calculator 2026

Does South Dakota tax capital gains? No. Its Department of Revenue says South Dakota does not impose a state income tax, and the inheritance tax ended July 1, 2001. A resident selling stock, land or a business in 2026 therefore pays federal tax alone, where a single filer’s long-term gain stays at 0% up to $49,450 of taxable income and the 3.8% NIIT starts above $200,000 of MAGI.

Does South Dakota tax capital gains?

No. South Dakota has no personal income tax and no corporate income tax, so a resident’s gain on stocks, land or a business is not taxed by the state. South Dakota’s revenue comes mainly from sales and use taxes.

Trusts are a common reason people ask about South Dakota, and trust taxation follows its own rules. For an individual seller, the only income tax on the gain is federal: up to 20% on long-term gain plus the 3.8% NIIT at higher incomes. Land or a business in a neighboring income-tax state, such as Minnesota, Iowa or Nebraska, can still be taxed there.

South Dakota’s tax scope starts with the individual seller

South Dakota’s Department of Revenue individual-tax guidance states that the state has no income tax. This resolves the South Dakota personal-income component for the individual worksheet here. It does not establish that a transaction has no sales, property or other charges, which follow their own laws and bases.

Distinguish an individual’s taxable gain from an estate’s or entity’s separate reporting responsibilities. An investment sold by one taxpayer and later distributed to another needs the seller’s correct return treatment. Keep the sale documentation, adjusted basis and the identity of the person or entity realizing the gain together.

Select the no-state-income-tax mode only for the confirmed South Dakota resident individual scenario. The federal calculation can still produce preferential or ordinary tax and NIIT, depending on holding period and annual income. If the asset or business activity connects with another jurisdiction, determine that jurisdiction’s source-income treatment before treating the combined state cost as zero. A South Dakota address does not settle every external connection.
