Does Wyoming tax capital gains?

No. Wyoming has no individual income tax and no corporate income tax, so gains on stock, minerals, ranch land or a business are not taxed by the state. The Legislature’s own tax-structure report lists the individual income tax rate as 0%.

Wyoming relies on mineral severance, property and sales taxes instead, and those are not taxes on an investment gain. Federal capital gains tax still applies, and property in an income-tax state such as Colorado, Idaho or Montana can still be taxed by that state on sale.

Wyoming’s report distinguishes individual and other state taxes

The Wyoming Legislature’s June 2025 tax-structure presentation lists the individual income-tax rate as 0%. The table separates that category from the state’s other tax types and collections. A zero individual-income figure is evidence about that category; it should not be turned into a claim that selling Wyoming property has no charges of any kind.

For the individual ordinary-sale scenario here, the resident no-income-tax mode isolates the Wyoming component. If the asset belongs to an entity, an estate or a trust, establish the taxpayer and applicable rules first. Keep the legislative report’s publication date visible when comparing it with a later enacted change or preparing a historical return.

Enter the federal gain from proceeds, adjusted basis and approved selling costs, then supply the prepared annual income and NIIT figures. Wyoming’s zero line does not change federal preferential brackets. Another jurisdiction may also tax sourced property or business income connected with the sale; review that jurisdiction before treating a move to Wyoming as eliminating every state component of the transaction.
